About Course

Begin with the normal pancreas, its digestive and hormone functions, nearby lymph nodes, how pancreatic cancers develop, 2026 statistics, risk factors, symptoms, and the diagnostic workup. No registry coding is required in the first module.

Then build an abstract step by step: pancreatic subsite and histology; Solid Tumor Rules; grade and site-specific data items; pretreatment extent, nodes and stage; how treatment works; and how surgery, radiation and systemic therapy are coded from actual treatment records. Short decisions and feedback appear throughout.

Practice writing source-based abstract text and work through five fictional longitudinal charts with sectioned imaging, pathology, physician and treatment documents. The interactive lab includes coded selections and text fields. Its automatic check covers a core set; review additional fields with current 2026 manuals. Finish with a comprehensive 20-question exam and a course feedback questionnaire. Designed for new cancer registry learners.

Course Content

Module 1: Meet the Pancreas and Understand the Disease
Begin with the organ’s anatomy and normal functions. Learn how pancreatic cancer develops and spreads, which symptoms lead to a workup, and what imaging, endoscopy, and pathology can tell the care team. No registry codes are required.

  • Meet the Pancreas: Anatomy and Its Normal Jobs
  • What Pancreatic Cancer Is and How It Spreads
  • From Symptoms to Diagnosis: A Pancreatic Workup
  • Module 1 Summary: Pancreas, Disease, and Workup
  • Module 1 Review: Pancreas and Diagnostic Workup
  • Module 1 Feedback: Pancreatic Site and Sources

Module 2: Pancreas Solid Tumor Rules and Histology
Apply the 2026.1 Other Sites solid tumor rules to count pancreatic primaries and assign histology from the most appropriate record source. Work through separate tumors, Table 11 relationships, neoadjuvant timing, recap, review, and feedback.

Module 3: Pancreatic Grade and Site Specific Data Items
Choose the 2026 pancreas or NET Pancreas schema, separate clinical, pathological, and posttherapy grade, and capture the applicable CA 19-9 or Ki-67 value from the right source and time frame. Includes interactive chart decisions, recap, scored review, and feedback.

Module 4: Pancreatic Extent, Nodes, and Stage
Use 2026 SEER*RSA to code EOD primary tumor, regional nodes, and distant metastasis for pancreas and NET pancreas; connect the evidence to Summary Stage and the appropriate AJCC staging source. Includes interactive decisions, recap, review, and feedback.

Module 5: Pancreatic Surgery and Treatment Effect
Abstract first-course pancreatic surgery from operative and pathology reports, distinguish Whipple variants and distal or total pancreatectomy, document regional node and other-site procedures, and assess post-neoadjuvant treatment effect. Includes chart decisions, recap, review, and learner feedback.

Module 6: Radiation and Systemic Therapy
Trace first-course pancreatic radiation and systemic therapy from treatment records. Code radiation phases, modality and technique; classify drugs with SEER*Rx; distinguish administered from planned treatment and record sequence with surgery. Includes chart decisions, recap, review, and feedback.

Module 7: Pancreatic Practice Abstracts
Apply anatomy, reportability, histology, grade, stage, surgery, radiation, and systemic treatment coding to five fictional but realistic patient records. Read full chart notes and reports, enter coded fields in the practice lab, compare feedback, and complete a module reflection.

Module 8: Pancreas Boot Camp Wrap-Up
Bring the full pancreas abstracting workflow together in a course summary, complete a 20-question comprehensive final exam, and share separate feedback about the learning experience.
