About Course

Start with normal breast function, ducts, lobules, and regional lymph nodes. Learn how breast cancer begins and spreads, current incidence, risk factors, symptoms, imaging, biopsy, biomarkers, and treatment concepts before using registry codes.

Build a 2026 breast abstract in the order an abstractor works: primary site and laterality, multiple primaries and histology, grade and ER/PR/HER2, EOD, Summary Stage and AJCC, surgery, radiation, and systemic therapy. Interactive checks and scored reviews appear throughout.

Finish with a text-abstraction guide, five full fictional patient records with 39 detailed source reports, an interactive 36-field coding and seven-text-entry worksheet for each case, a cumulative 28-question exam, and a five-question course review. Verify exact coding against the diagnosis-year SEER, STORE, Solid Tumor Rules, SEER*RSA, Grade/SSDI, and AJCC resources. Designed for learners new to breast cancer and registry work.

Course Content

Module 1: Breast Cancer Fundamentals
Start with normal breast anatomy and lymphatics, then learn cancer development, histology, types, and diagnosis. Follow fictional Linda Martinez from screening to biopsy confirmation with colorful activities, flashcards, and a 10-question quiz. No registry coding in this module.

  • Lesson 1: Anatomy and Physiology of the Breast
  • Lesson 2: Breast Lymphatics and Regional Lymph Nodes
  • Lesson 3: Understanding Breast Cancer
  • Lesson 4: Histology of Breast Cancer
  • Lesson 5: Types and Presentations of Breast Cancer
  • Lesson 6: How Breast Cancer Is Diagnosed and Module Summary
  • Module 1 Review: Breast Fundamentals
  • Module 1 Feedback: What Helped You Learn?

Module 2: Breast Primary Site, Multiple Primaries, and Histology
Apply diagnosis-year breast site guidance and the 2026.1 Breast Solid Tumor Rules to separate lesions, in situ and invasive components, and histology. Includes a linked fictional case, five reveal-and-reason decisions, a scored review, summary, and feedback.

Module 3: Breast Grade and Biomarker Coding
Code clinical and pathological grade, ER, PR, HER2, and genomic test evidence for 2026 breast abstracts. Follow Naomi Ellis across biopsy and reflex testing, then practice with a scored review and ungraded feedback.

Module 4: Breast Extent of Disease and Summary Stage
Use 2026 SEER breast EOD v3.3 and Summary Stage 2018 to code tumor extension, regional nodes, distant disease, and stage from Naomi Ellis’s definitive operation and pathology. Includes interactive decisions, full linked reports, recap, scored review, and feedback.

Module 5: Breast AJCC TNM and Prognostic Stage
Stage Naomi Ellis at diagnosis and after upfront surgery using AJCC breast 8th edition. Practice cT/cN/cM, pT/pN, sentinel-node notation, grade and biomarker inputs, and clinical versus pathological prognostic groups. Includes interactive case, recap, scored review, and feedback.

Module 6: Breast Surgery and Regional Node Treatment Coding
Apply 2026 STORE and SEER breast surgery codes to Naomi’s biopsy-proven lumpectomy, same-day cavity shaves, sentinel node biopsy, margins, dates, and node counts. Includes an interactive case lab, recap, 10-question scored review, and feedback.

Module 7: Breast Radiation Coding with STORE
Read a realistic breast radiation completion report, identify delivered phases and target volumes, and code 2026 STORE modality, planning technique, draining nodes, fractions, doses, course total, dates, location, and surgery sequence. Includes interactive practice, scored review, recap, and feedback.

Module 8: Breast Systemic Therapy and First-Course Coding
Follow Naomi Ellis from postoperative medical oncology consultation through chemotherapy refusal and verified endocrine therapy start. Use STORE 2026 and SEER*Rx to code chemotherapy, hormone therapy, immunotherapy, dates, sequence, and treatment at this versus another facility. Includes interactive cases, recap, scored review, and feedback.

Module 9: Integrated Breast Practice Abstracts
Work five complete fictional breast case records across reportability, site, histology, grade, biomarkers, stage, surgery, radiation, and systemic treatment. Enter an abstract before revealing source-linked answers; finish with a scored review and feedback.

Module 10: Breast Abstract Quality Review
Audit an intentionally flawed 2026 breast abstract against the linked reports. Correct unsupported site, tumor size, biomarkers, stage, surgery, radiation, systemic therapy, and dates; finish with interactive micro-audits, scored review, recap, and feedback.

Module 11: Breast Boot Camp Course Summary, Final Exam, and Review
Complete this after Modules 1–10. Synthesize the full breast abstraction workflow, take the cumulative final exam, and share separate ungraded course feedback.

Optional Refresher: Breast Foundations
Begin with Module 1: Breast Cancer Fundamentals for the updated six-lesson beginner pathway and Linda Martinez’s story. These earlier breast foundation lessons are optional reference material.
