About Course

Start with the normal brain, spinal cord, meninges and pituitary. Learn how primary CNS tumors arise, why location causes symptoms, common risk factors, incidence and the diagnostic path from examination and imaging to integrated neuropathology. Learn where cerebrospinal fluid and the neuraxis fit, and why a conventional regional lymph-node chain is usually not assigned for these CNS schemas. No registry codes are needed in the foundation lessons.

Then build an abstract in clinical order: reportability and primary site; separate 2026 malignant and nonmalignant CNS multiple-primary and histology rules; laterality and lifetime sequence; grade and molecular findings; EOD and Summary Stage; surgery, radiation and systemic treatment. The radiation lessons compare consultation, simulation, delivered fractions, target, planning and dose.

Five fictional 2026 patient chart packets include dated physician, imaging, operative, pathology and treatment records. The revised interactive lab lets learners choose site, histology, laterality, sequence, behavior, grade, extent and first-course treatment, then write registry text and check radiation examples. A course summary, comprehensive final exam and feedback questionnaire close the boot camp. Use diagnosis-year SEER, SEER*RSA, Grade and STORE manuals for final coding decisions.

Course Content

Start Here: Brain and CNS Foundations
Meet the brain, spinal cord, meninges, and their normal functions. Learn how tumors arise, why location affects symptoms, how they can spread, and how clinicians investigate a new lesion before any registry coding.

  • Brain and Spinal Cord: What They Normally Do
  • What a CNS Tumor Is and How It Affects the Patient
  • From First Symptom to a CNS Diagnosis and Treatment Plan
  • Foundation Summary and Clinical Check

Module 1: Brain and CNS Anatomy, Reportability, and Diagnostic Sources
Map primary brain, meninges, spinal cord, nerve root, and intracranial gland sites; follow imaging, neurosurgery, pathology, and integrated diagnosis. Decide whether the tumor enters malignant or nonmalignant CNS rules. Includes source decisions, recap, review, and feedback.

Module 2: Malignant Brain and CNS Solid Tumor Rules
Apply the 2026 Malignant CNS and Peripheral Nerves multiple-primary and histology rules to /3 primary tumors. Work rule order, timing, paired and multifocal findings, recurrent disease, integrated molecular diagnosis, and behavior-specific examples. Includes interactive decisions, recap, review, and feedback.

Module 3: Benign and Borderline CNS Solid Tumor Rules
Apply the separate 2026 Non-Malignant CNS rules to reportable /0 and /1 tumors of eligible intracranial and CNS sites. Practice meningiomas, pituitary and nerve-root examples, multiple primaries, histology, behavior, and site boundaries. Includes interactive decisions, recap, review, and feedback.

Module 4: CNS Grade and Molecular Data Items
Code clinical and pathological WHO grade for brain, CNS Other, and intracranial gland schemas; interpret integrated diagnoses and select applicable molecular SSDIs using the 2026 Grade Manual and SEER*RSA. Includes case decisions, recap, scored review, and feedback.

Module 5: CNS Extent of Disease and Summary Stage
Use the 2026 Brain, CNS Other, and Intracranial Gland SEER*RSA schemas to code primary tumor extent, nodes, metastases, and Summary Stage. Distinguish direct extension, midline shift, CSF/drop metastasis, and the nonmalignant codes. Includes interactive source decisions, recap, review, and feedback.

Module 6: CNS Surgery, Radiation, and Systemic Therapy
Abstract first-course CNS treatment from operative, radiation, and oncology records. Apply 2026 site-specific surgery codes, distinguish stereotactic biopsy from radiosurgery, capture radiation phases and systemic agents, and document treatment timing. Includes interactive decisions, recap, review, and feedback.

Module 7: Brain and CNS Practice Abstracting Lab
Work five fictional 2026 patient charts: glioblastoma, oligodendroglioma, benign meningioma, spinal ependymoma, and pituitary adenoma. Read complete dated source records, enter case-based codes, check field-by-field explanations, and review a QC workpaper and module feedback.

Module 8: Brain and CNS Boot Camp Closing
Pull the whole abstract together with a concise course summary, a 20-question comprehensive final exam, and a separate ungraded course review. Revisit malignant and benign rules, site and reportability, grade and molecular data, extent, first-course treatment, and case quality checks.
