About Course

This course is designed to train new and aspiring oncology data specialists in the proper abstraction of prostate cancer cases. This course offers hands-on instruction aligned with national standards from the CoC, CDC NPCR, NCI SEER, AJCC, and NAACCR. Students will gain skills in coding primary site, histology, staging, grade, treatment and more. Ideal for those preparing for an ODS credential or seeking to strengthen their prostate cancer abstraction knowledge.

What Will You Learn?

  • Describe the anatomy and physiology of the prostate and explain how its structure relates to disease development and spread.
  • Identify and interpret key diagnostic tests, pathology findings, and staging systems used in prostate cancer cases.
  • Apply national cancer registry coding standards to accurately document prostate cancer cases in an abstract.
  • Demonstrate the ability to organize and record clinical information to create a complete and accurate prostate cancer abstract.
  • Explain how cancer registry data tells the patient’s clinical story while maintaining compliance with national reporting standards.

Course Content

Module 1 covers the structure and function of the prostate gland, the lymph nodes involved in regional spread, and the basic characteristics of prostate cancer. This module also introduces the key diagnostic tools and procedures used to detect and evaluated prostate cancer.

Module 2: Prostate Cancer Treatment
Understanding prostate cancer treatment is essential for accurate cancer registry abstraction. In this module, you will learn about the most common treatment options used to manage prostate cancer, including surgery, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and active surveillance. We will discuss how each treatment works, when it is typically used, and where to find treatment information within the medical record. Most importantly, you will learn how these therapies are coded in the cancer registry abstract, including key data items, coding rules, and common abstracting challenges. By the end of this module, you will be able to identify and accurately document first course treatment for prostate cancer patients.
